Placing a loved one in a nursing home is one of the most difficult tasks a family member ever faces. But when it becomes necessary, prospective residents and their families should have the best information possible to make this decision. It’s a good idea to do some preliminary research before you visit any nursing homes. Some quality issues are subject to personal preferences while others are critical to any resident’s health and well being. Ask nursing home residents, resident’s families, citizen advocacy groups, and your physician for their opinions about various facilities.
Some issues to consider when evaluating your choices include bed availability, provision of services that the resident will need, affordability, and quality. Of course, the location is important too. Gogebic Medical Care Facility is located in a graciously wooded area where residents can relax in the tranquility of peacefulness and serenity. We have a beautiful walking path through our own flower garden to enjoy. Residents and their families often take pleasure from their time together outside.
Nursing home admissions can be short term as well as long term. Many of our residents stay only long enough to regain their strength after an illness or injury. Our staff is always pleased to see someone able to return back to their own home.
There are few steps to a nursing home admission. First of all, you must see your physician for a complete History and Physical of your health. He will order a Chest x-ray, urinalysis, and blood tests to be performed prior to admission. A pre-admission screening for mental illness or dementia also needs to be done before entering a nursing home. This is usually done for you while you’re in the hospital, or if you’re coming from home, your doctor may complete the appropriate paperwork. If you are coming from a hospital, A Discharge Summary is also required before admission. Another requirement is that you bring any insurance cards with you. This would include your Medicare, any supplement insurance that you carry, and Michigan Medicaid if you receive assistance.
Personal items must be marked with resident’s name prior to admission, and clothing should be marked with a permanent laundry marker. This lessens the confusion of possessions here at the Facility. Families may bring in a television, as long as they meet size requirements. There is minimal charge for cable services. The Facility will supply a telephone at your bedside, if requested, with a minimal monthly charge also.
Gogebic Medical Care Facility accepts admissions seven days a week/24 hours a day. Admission time and transportation arrangements need to be pre-arranged. Feel free to call our Admission Coordinator, Janice Koski, with any questions Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at (906) 224-9811, Extension 102.
